Gettin' Political

A Pledge

It's been a while since I've done a new Hugh's Views, but I'm going to try to do one each month. Man, have I gotten myself in deep or what?

San Diego GOP Convention Preview

It's going to be an interesting year politically, what with the presidential elections heating up here in the good ol' U. S. of A. Now that smilin' Bob Dole has the nomination sewn up for the Republicans, the Democrats have a fun time in store for themselves. And since the Republican National Convention is to be in my hometown of San Diego, I expect to be inundated with pre-convention reports: e.g. there will be a special off-site area for demonstrations, where people with opinions that don't jibe with the official Republican point of view will be allowed to speak. Unfortunately the site is across the highway from the convention center, so delegates won't see people who actually find their party's platform objectionable. Hard to believe anyone would object to stripping environmental protection, cutting aid to the needy (in favor of the greedy), slashing resources for public education (or is it eliminating public education all together?) as well as the rest of the items that make up the agenda of the Grand Old Party.

Contract With Who? (Not Hugh!)

If I sound a little harsh, I'm alarmed by the speeches and posturing of the Republicans in Congress and what they've tried to push through using their "Contract With America" as a blueprint as if it were holy scripture. I was never given a chance to sign this piece of propaganda and don't know anyone who did. We can't afford four or even two more years of turning back the clocks to a land where intolerance is the norm and the government strives to help big business more that it does individuals.

Three Powerful Words

"We the people" should be more that just the first three words of the original American contract.
