A Quick Look at the Cyberhighway

It's been a while since I first put my web page out for people to stumble over. This was to be a summer '95 project on the computer, and it did take a while to put together.

Responses?

Have I gotten any responses from my page? A few people from different parts of the U.S. and Canada send some positive comments. I'm still waiting to hear from someone in another part of the world. This is just a little spot on the cyberhighway, and consequently doesn't get too many tourists. But a major site has hundreds, thousands and even millions of "hits" on its pages. The Web is an amazing thing with little cubbyholes right next to superhighrises. I think it can and will act a leveling agent in the world culture. Have we become part of the world John Lennon dreamed of when he wrote Imagine?

Free Flow of Info

I see communication flowing freely from country to country and from individual to individual. "Little" lives mingling with the "big". People able to publish their thoughts freely without a corporate editor telling them what can and can't be said. Some in government see this as a threat to their power, but is it? Here in the United States we are supposed to have freedom of speech. Is this not an extension of this cherished right? Freedom of cyberspace. Freedom to babble on until the person reading the babble decides to jump ship and go to another place, just as we jump from place to place when reading the morning newspaper, but a lot slower and costlier...

At What Price?

This is the real problem with this technology; it does have a price tag. The people on the lower financial end of the society don't have money for the connections, modems or even the computers that make this all possible. This wonderland of information and communication needs to be available to anyone who wants to access it. But how? I don't have the answer. I don't know anybody who does. Through libraries? It's happening. Through schools. Definitely. There are more and more ways to join the world that only exists in digital form. This is only the beginning...
